AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
500 AM EDT SAT OCT 18

TODAY THRU MONDAY...SEVERAL CHANGES WERE MADE TO GRIDDED FORECAST
PARAMETERS AND TEXT FORECASTS CONCERNING THE CLIPPER SYSTEM MOVING
THROUGH THE AREA LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY. LATEST GUIDANCE
ALL SUGGESTING A WEAKER S/WV...TRACKING SEWRD THRU NY. THIS COULD
LEAVE MOST OF VT HIGH AND DRY SO BACKED OFF POPS/CLOUD COVER/QPF.
RETAINED PCPN EVENT FOR NRN NY AND S-CNTRL VT CLOSER TO THE TRACK OF
THE S/WV AND THE FORECAST VERTICAL MOTION. ALL THERMAL PROFILES
SUGGEST LIGHT SNOW IS MOST LIKELY OUTCOME. DID NOT MENTION
ACCUMULATIONS SINCE I USED CHANCE POPS....BUT IT WOULDN'T BE
IMPOSSIBLE FOR PORTIONS OF THE ADIRONDACKS TO ACCUMULATE AN INCH OR
SO OF SNOW.

GUIDANCE TEMPS SEEM TO BE PRETTY GOOD. COOLED THE MAX A COUPLE
DEGREES TODAY, BASED ON PRETTY PERSISTENT LOW CLOUDS. THE OTHER
SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN TEMPS WAS TO BE WARMER IN MOST AREAS MONDAY
NGT...AS WARM ADVECTION OVERSPREADS THE AREA AHEAD OF THE LOW
PRESSURE AND FRONT THAT IS PROMISING TO MOVE THROUGH THE AREA ON
TUESDAY. THE TUESDAY SYSTEM WILL BE THE SINGLE MOST LIKELY PERIOD
FOR SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST PERIODS...BUT
SHOWERS ARE LIKELY ON SUBSEQUENT DAYS, TOO, WITH THE COLD UPR TROF
HANGING IN THE NORTHEAST.

EXTENDED...ENSEMBLE RUNS OF MRF SHOW MANY DIFFERENT SCENARIOS WITH
RESPECT TO TIMING OF UPPER TROUGH MOVING INTO THE NORTHEAST UNITED
STATES TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. HOWEVER...AVERAGE OF ALL SCENARIOS
YIELDS AN UPPER TROUGH AXIS TO THE WEST OF THE FORECAST AREA ON
TUESDAY AND THEN TROUGH CLOSING OFF INTO AN UPPER LOW BY THURSDAY
BEFORE FINALLY MOVING EAST OF THE FORECAST AREA ON FRIDAY. LONG
RANGE RUN OF THE CANADIAN MODEL SUPPORTS THIS SCENARIO. GOING
FORECAST HAS THE RIGHT IDEA OF A CHANCE OF SHOWERS
TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY WITH PROBABILITIES GRADUALLY DECREASING
EACH DAY. TIME HEIGHT SECTIONS OF TEMPERATURE ACROSS THE FORECAST
AREA SUGGESTS SNOW LEVELS WILL BE LOWERING TO AROUND 1500 FEET
WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY. AS A RESULT...WILL DELINEATE TYPE OF
PRECIPITATION IN GRIDS DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. WITH SYSTEM MOVING
FAR ENOUGH EAST ON FRIDAY...WILL KEEP FORECAST DRY AT THIS POINT.
PLENTY OF CLOUD COVER SHOULD EXIST DURING THE EXTENDED...ESPECIALLY
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY...WHICH WILL KEEP MAX TEMPERATURES AROUND
SEASONAL NORMALS ON TUESDAY...BUT BELOW FOR WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

                        LSC WEATHER CENTER FORECAST
[1]Lyndon State College Meteorology Home Page
                      5:00PM, Friday October 17, 2003
                   STUDENT METEOROLOGIST: Anthony Seibel
** The latest forecast for Northeast & North Central Vermont**
** The area bounded by Waterbury, St. Johnsbury, and Newport**

Tonight: Showers are expected through midnight tonight, with a chance
of snow showers for higher elevations. Low temperatures will be chilly
this evening in the range of 28-34 degrees with light and variable
   winds.

Saturday: Expect a wonderful day with partly sunny skies and
temperatures in the range of 49-55 degrees. Conditions will be perfect
for a fall hike in the rolling mountains of the Northeast Kingdom.
Winds for Saturday will be from the northwest at 5-10mph.

Saturday Night: Saturday evening will be another cool night for
Northern Vermont. Lows will be around 30-35 degrees, with some
isolated areas seeing temperatures dipping slightly below the 30
degree mark. Winds will be from the north at 5-10mph.

Sunday: Cool high temperatures in the low 40s will prevent valley
areas from seeing any significant snow showers through the day.
Mountain areas can expect snow accumulations of up to one inch from
snow showers during the day with high temperatures in the mid to upper
30s. Overnight lows will be rather cold for this time of year as they
dip into the mid 20s. Winds from the northeast will be light and
changing to northwest winds by Monday morning.

                             Extended Forecast

Monday: We will continue to see cloudy skies through the day monday,
with a chance of showers monday evening. High near 50 degrees with
   Lows in the lower 30's.

Tuesday: Another damp and dreary day with cloudy skies and a chance of
showers. High temps will be just above 50 degrees, with lows again in
   the lower 30's.

Wednesday: Wednesday will yield mostly cloudy skies with a chance of
showers. Daytime highs will be in the mid to upper 40's. Snow showers
are possible Wednesday night as lows fall into the mid 30's with
   scattered showers through Thursday.

                            Forecast Discussion

Showers look to be the main weather event we'll be seeing for most of
the coming week. A weak front pushing through this evening will cause
some scattered showers across the area, with upper elevations seeing
snow accumulating to nearly an inch. Colder overnight lows this week
will make a chance of overnight snow showers a strong possibility. The
current path of the jetstream will be directing most weather from
central Canada directly over our area through most of the week,
bringing with it cooler temperatures and a sufficient supply of
mid-level moisture. Be sure to make your way to the Fenton Chester
Arena tomorrow night as the Lyndon State College hockey team plays
their first game of the season against Bridgewater State College.
   Enjoy your weekend!
