The Dickcissel that had been hanging around my yard was last seen by me on
Friday, 10/31. He may still be here with the flock of House Sparrows, but,
unfortunately, I've been leaving the house in the dark and returning in the
dark, so I haven't really been able to check well.
A visitor (human race) to my yard who photographed the Dickcissel on Tues,
10/28 noted the following in an email to me on 10/28:
"An interesting side note is that the immature White-crowned Sparrow
at your feeder is of the race Gambelli which comes from the western part
of the USA. That can easily be told by the pale area just forward of the
eye; i.e., there is no line from the eye to the base of the bill as you
would normally see in a member of the eastern race."
I had noticed that this particular White-crowned Sparrow looked different,
but I'm not all that knowledgeable in this area, so really appreciated
receiving this info.
I apologize for the delay in sending this update - life has been
particularly hectic in this neck of the woods lately!
