Dear Friends of Wintering Bald Eagles in the Connecticut River Valley:

Please join dozens of other volunteers for the Audubon Society of New Hampshire as we begin our 23rd consecutive year of Wintering Bald Eagle Monitoring, a statewide effort to conserve and protect this federally-listed "threatened" and state-listed "endangered" species, organized in cooperation with our partners at the Nongame Wildlife Program at the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department and at the US Fish & Wildlife Service. 

Over the past two decades, this intensive field project has produced critically important data on bald eagle wintering activities, information that the NH Fish & Game Department and NH Audubon have used in our on-going efforts to protect sensitive eagle habitat.  Whether you are able to commit to regularly scheduled weekly fixed point surveys or driving routes throughout the entire winter, or are only available a few times over the winter season, we need and welcome your help.  Please join us in observing eagles this winter! 

Field training for volunteers participating in the 2003-04 Wintering Bald Eagle Monitoring Project is being offered at the following two locations and times:

Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 - Eagle Watching Field Training and Techniques on Great Bay.

Meet at the Adams Point Wildlife Management Area, Durham, NH, from 10:00am-12 noon.

To reach Adams Point, from Durham, take Route 108 south for 0.4 mi., turn left on Durham Point Road, go 3.5 mi., turn left at signs for Adams Point Road, proceed to the parking area at the very end of the road. We will be walking in a field and on a shoreline and standing outside for about 2 hours. Bring binoculars and/or spotting scopes and appropriate footwear and outerwear.  Public restroom facilities are NOT available.

Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 - Eagle Watching Field Training and Techniques on the Merrimack.

Meet at the Amoskeag Fishways Learning Center upper parking area, Manchester, NH, from 9:00am-12 noon. 

To reach the Amoskeag Fishways, take Exit 6 off of I-293, turn right at the stop light at Fletcher Street, park in the gravel parking lot on the left. We will be carpooling to several locations in the greater Manchester area and will be in and out of vehicles frequently; please come prepared to combine with others to reduce the total number of vehicles. We will return to the Amoskeag Fishways parking lot at the end of the morning.  Bring binoculars and/or spotting scopes and appropriate footwear and outerwear.  The Fishways building is closed on Sundays, so public restroom facilities are not available.

Please reply to this e-mail to let me know whether or not you plan to attend either of these field training sessions, AND to obtain your volunteer registration materials for the upcoming winter season.
