I took a drive today to see what the L. Champlain waterfowl situation was in Essex Co. The highlight was 300+ Ringneck Ducks at Highlands Forge Lake. Whallon's Bay and Essex produced the occasional Goldeneye and C. Loon. A Shrike and two Rough-legged Hawks were seen near Webb-Royce swamp. Since things were so slow I thought I'd spin down to Brilyea Access area over in VT. On the way, 4 more Roughies and a pair of Red-tails were seen just over the border. I was disappointed with the complete absence of waterfowl at Brilyea - the only birds seen were a Roughie and a score of Snow Buntings. Could this have anything to do with the (permanent?) hunting camp in the parking lot?? I've seen the same three hard-sided campers there every time I have visited since early August, complete with lawn chairs and boats, and not a soul or a vehicle around. Ain't squattin' illegal?? Should be! I can't see much sense in going back - I feel like I am trespassing in someone's yard!
