AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
214 AM EST SAT NOV 22 2003

CURRENTLY...VARIABLE CLOUD COVER ACROSS FORECAST AREA AT THIS HOUR.
SOUTHERN ZONES REMAINING MOSTLY CLR...AND TEMPS HAVE RESPONDED BY
DIPPING LOWER THAN NORTHERN ZONES...WHERE LT NORTH FLOW AND
PREVALENT MVFR CONDS HAVE KEPT TEMPS GENERALLY SOME 2 TO 5 DEGREES
WARMER.

TODAY/TONIGHT...QUIET PATTERN CONTINUES IN THE SHORT TERM...AS
BROAD RIDGING AT SFC AND ALOFT CONTROLS SENSIBLE WX. AFTER SOME
RESIDUAL MORNING LOW CLOUDS...ALL AREAS SHOULD SEE PLENTY OF SUN
WITH ONLY SOME PASSING HIGH LEVEL CIRRUS DRIFTING E-W ACROSS AREA
THIS AFTERNOON. POSITION OF 1025 HPA ANTICYCLONE DUE NORTH OF VT
THIS AFTERNOON SHOULD PRODUCE SHALLOW LOW LEVEL NORTHERLY DRAINAGE
FLOW...WHICH IS DEPICTED IN MESOETA 1000-950 HPA THICKNESS PROFILES.
THIS ARGUES FOR NEARLY UNIFORM TEMPS TODAY ACROSS FA WITH MID-UPPER
40S COMMONPLACE. ANOTHER EXCELLENT RADIATIONAL COOLING NIGHT ON TAP
TONIGHT W/ONLY A FEW PASSING HIGH CLOUDS AND LT TO CALM WINDS. THUS
WILL UNDERCUT GUIDANCE MINS HERE SOME 2-5 DEGREES ACROSS THE BOARD.

SUNDAY/SUNDAY NT...SFC RIDGE AXIS DEPARTS EASTBOUND BY SUNDAY
AFTERNOON...WITH FLOW BACKING TO SOUTH. TEMPS RESPOND ACCORDINGLY
AND SHOULD CLIMB SOME 2 TO 5 DEGREES ABOVE TODAY'S MAX READINGS FROM
THE CVLY WESTWARD. EAST OF THE GREENS...MIXING NOT AS SUBSTANTIAL
WITH SHALLOW COOL AIR INITIALLY STUBBORN TO RETREAT WHICH IS SHOWN
QUITE WELL IN LATEST BUFKIT SOUNDINGS PROFILES. THIS IS TYPICAL WITH
ONSET OF WAA PATTERNS IN FALL/WINTER...THUS HIGHS HERE TO BE SIMILAR
TO TODAY'S MAXES. SOME HINT AT WEAK ISENTROPIC LIFT/RH IN INITIAL
WAA SURGE IN LOWER LEVELS DURING THE DAY ACROSS N NY. WOULD NOT BE
SURPRISED TO SEE A LT SHOWER OR SPRINKLE HERE AT SOME TIME DURING
THE DAY...BUT DUE TO SHALLOW NATURE OF MOISTURE...WILL DISCOUNT FOR
NOW AND KEEP THINGS DRY. SOUTH FLOW THEN INCREASES SUN NT FROM CVLY
WESTWARD...WITH TEMPS HOLDING NEARLY STEADY OR ONLY SLOWLY FALLING
AFTER MIDNIGHT. MUCH COOLER ACROSS E VT...WHERE LACK OF BNDRY LYR
MIXING/WIND AND GENERALLY CLEAR SKIES SHOULD ALLOW TEMPS TO FALL
CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN COUNTERPARTS TO THE WEST.

MONDAY/MONDAY NT...MOST ACTIVE WX TO OCCUR IN THE FORECAST PERIOD
DURING THIS TIME FRAME...AS SFC LOW AND ASSOC MID TO UPPER LEVEL
TROUGH/CLOSED LOW LIFT NORTHEAST ACROSS WESTERN GREAT LAKES. WHAT
THIS SPELLS IS BREEZY AND MILD CONDS FOR MONDAY AS ALL OF FA WELL
INTO THE WARM SECTOR. MAX TEMPS TOUGH HERE DUE TO TIMING OF PRECIP
IN ETA VS GFS SOLNS...AND THE DEGREE OF BNDRY LYR MIXING. WILL OPT
TO GO AT LEAST 3 TO 5 DEGREES WARMER THAN GFS SOLN HERE...ESP
CONSIDERING IT'S SLOWER TIMING OF PRECIP ONSET. AGREE W/PREVIOUS
FCST ON TIMING OF PRECIP...WITH LIKELY POPS BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON
N NY...AND BY EARLY TO MID EVENING HOURS VT AS COLD FRONT ENCROACHES
ON AREA. FRONT MUCH MORE PROGRESSIVE IN NATURE THAN LAST
SYSTEM...AND OTHER THAN A FEW LINGERING LAKE ENHANCED SHRASN ACROSS
ADIRONDACKS...PRECIP SHOULD ALL BE OVER BY TUE DAYBREAK.

TUESDAY INTO LATE NEXT WEEK...NO MAJOR CHANGES PLANNED HERE W/TEMPS
WITHIN 5 DEGREES OF NORMAL LATE FALL READINGS. NEXT SYSTEM STILL
PROGGED TO AFFECT AREA BY LATE THANKSGIVING DAY WITH CHC OF
RA/SN...THEN DRY AND SEASONABLE BY NEXT WEEKEND.

&&

...PREVIOUS DISCUSSION FROM 507 PM...

.SHORT TERM (TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)...
WEAK COLD FRONT TO MOVE THROUGH THE AREA TONIGHT...BUT NOT MUCH IN
THE WAY OF MOISTURE WITH IT. SATELLITE LOOP SHOW SOME LOW CLOUDS
NORTH OF MONTREAL AND THE OTTAWA VLY...BUT THESE MOVING EAST AND
WILL NOT COME INTO THE FORECAST AREA OVERNIGHT. SOME HIGH THIN CIRRUS
MOVING EAST FROM THE GREAT LAKES OVERNIGHT...SO WILL GO WITH MOSTLY
CLEAR SKIES OVERNIGHT. GOOD RADIATIONAL COOLING IN STORE
OVERNIGHT...SO HAVE GONE LOWER THAN MOS GUIDANCE FOR OVERNIGHT LOW
TEMPERATURES.

WILL GO WITH MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES ON SATURDAY AS HIGH CLOUDS WILL BE
ON THE THIN SIDE. TEMPS WILL BE A BIT COOLER ON SATURDAY DUE TO
PASSAGE OF WEAK COLD FRONT TONIGHT. HIGH PRESSURE TO MOVE EAST OF
THE REGION ON SUNDAY...SO EXPECT A WARMING TREND ON THE TEMPERATURES
...UNDER PARTLY SUNNY SKIES.

PRESSURE GRADIENT TO BEGIN TO TIGHTEN LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AND
MONDAY...WITH A WINDY DAY IN STORE FOR MONDAY...AS A STRONG COLD
FRONT MOVES EAST FROM THE GREAT LAKES. MODELS SHOW SHOWERS WILL
DEVELOP BY MONDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS THE ST LAWRENCE VLY AND THE
ADIRONDACKS...AND TOWARD EVENING ACROSS THE CHAMPLAIN VLY AND THE
REMAINDER OF VERMONT. HAVE GONE WITH LIKELY POPS FOR MONDAY ACROSS
THE ST LAWRENCE VLY AND THE ADIRONDACKS...AND LIKELY POPS ACROSS
THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA MONDAY NIGHT. SHOWERS COULD CHANGE OVER TO
A PERIOD OF SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS THE ST LAWRENCE VLY AND THE
ADIRONDACKS AS COLDER AIR WORKS IN BEHIND THE COLD FRONT...AS SOME
LAKE EFFECT SNOW DEVELOP OFF OF LAKE ONTARIO. EXPECTING HIGH
TEMPERATURES MONDAY TO RANGE FROM 55 TO 60.
&&

.LONG TERM (TUESDAY THRU FRIDAY)...
GFS ENSEMBLES SHOW STRONG UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OVER THE NORTHEAST
US/CANADIAN MARITIMES AND A DEEP PROGRESSIVE TROF OVER THE CENTRAL
US. THIS IS IN LINE WITH ECMWF AND OPERATIONAL GFS. UKMET/ETA SLOWER.
FRONTAL PASSAGE IS A BIT FASTER(MONDAY EVENING) THAN ADVERTISED
YESTDAY BUT STILL BY 12Z TUE 850 TEMPS FALL TO AT LEAST -10 TO -15C
OVER LO AND SHOULD GENERATE CONDITIONAL INSTABILITY AND SOME LE SNOW
SHOWERS INTO THE ADIRONDACKS WITH WESTERLY WINDS AND PARTLY CLOUDY
SKIES ELSEWHERE. DEEP BROAD TROF REDEVELOPS TO OUR WEST OVER CONUS
WITH SEASONABLY COOL WEATHER WITH PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES WITH
LOW LEVEL TRAJECTORIES OFF THE LAKES. GFS BRINGS WEAK SHORTWAVE TROF
BY THANKSGIVING BUT IN THIS KIND OF SW FAST FLOW TIMING IS VERY
UNCERTAIN. MOS POPS ARE IN CHANCE CAT AS IS THE ENSEMBLE MOS. PTYPE
QUESTIONABLE SO WILL GO WITH RW/SW...SOME CHANCE OF DRIER WEATHER
FRIDAY SO WENT WITH THAT FOR NOW.

                        LSC WEATHER CENTER FORECAST
[1]Lyndon State College Meteorology Home Page
                      5:00PM, Friday November 21, 2003
                   STUDENT METEOROLOGIST: Anthony Seibel
** The latest forecast for Northeast & North Central Vermont**
** The area bounded by Waterbury, St. Johnsbury, and Newport**

Tonight: As Lyndon State College students depart for Thanksgiving
break, they'll be driving safe in some decent weather. Winds will
remain calm this evening with skies becoming mostly cloudy early in
the night. Lows will be in the range of 27-32 degrees.

Saturday: Skies will be mostly cloudy for the beginning of the day,
clearing to partly sunny skies. High temperatures will be very nice
once again in the range of 46-51 degrees with light winds from the
   north.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy skies remain with overnight lows
becoming cooler in the range of 25-30 degrees. Light winds will
continue from the north, becoming southeast by daybreak.

Sunday: Partly sunny skies will be in the picture for one last day
with highs becoming cool between 40-45 degrees. Skies will be partly
cloudy Sunday night with lows between 27-33 degrees. Winds for the day
will be from the south at 5-10mph.

                             Extended Forecast

Monday: Rain returns to the region Monday night as a Low pressure
system approaches from the midwest. Daytime highs will be warm once
again in the range of 51-56 degrees with winds from the south at
10-15mph. Lows Monday will be between 30-35 degrees.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy skies remain with a chance of showers or
flurries during the day. Highs will be between 37-42 degrees with lows
   between 32-36 degrees.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy skies continue with cooler daytime
temperatures. Highs will be between 35-40 degrees with overnight lows
   between 25-30 degrees.

                            Forecast Discussion

Small disturbances moving through our area will cause skies to become
mostly cloudy this evening. High pressure situated to our north will
clear skies up early on during Saturday. A beautiful weekend is to be
expected with partly to mostly sunny skies and very pleasant
temperatures. Thanksgiving on the other hand, doesn't look to be quite
as picturesque. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance of snow or
rain showers throughout the day and cool daytime highs. The Lyndon
State College student meteorology forecasts will be unavailable until
December 1, 2003. The latest National Weather Service forecast will be
available until students return from break. Have a wonderful
   Thanksgiving and week!
