However, I suspect most newsgroup "articles" are not posted via email
but through a news reader interface. I believe that if you have the
current version of the UVM licensed Symmantic AV software
<https://www.uvm.edu/software> on your desktop computer, it should
protect you from viruses should you attempt to download a virus from
a newsgroup. Of course, I've not personally tested this...
