Although the sexes are similar in Townsend's Solitaire, I am reasonably
confident that this individual is a male. I base my judgment on
indirect, but compelling, evidence.
If the bird had ever stopped to ask for directions, it wouldn't have
fetched up on the wrong side of the continent. Once I thought about
this widely recognized difference in the social behavior of males and
females, it became rather obvious to me that the solitaire must be a
