(This message is a cross-post to the CSSA, VAGUE, and IT-ANNOUNCE lists)
Just a reminder that the Linux Install Tutorial and Workshop that Upsilon Phi
Epsilon is sponsoring begins tonight at 6pm in Votey 367 with a Tutorial in how
to install LInux. This is a live demonstration only, the install party is tomorrow.
Please note that the time for tonight's tutorial has changed to accomodate a
group of people who would not otherwise have been able to attend.
Tomorrow at 1pm in the Bailey Howe Cybercafe, we will have a live Install Party
until 4:30pm. Depending on how much software you want to install, and whether
there will be a line for a set of distribution disks, it may take that much
time to install. A limited number of distribution disks will be available, such
as at least Red Hat 9 and SuSE 9. Several people have said they are bringing
distributions such as Mandrake, Slackware and Gentoo, but I can only promise
what I am bringing personally. The party is bring your own computer, keyboard,
mouse, monitor, and -- optionally -- an ethernet cable and printer (I
recommend, Epson). The cybercafe should be fairly quiet on a Saturday early
afternoon, and there will be refreshments such as coffee and cookies.
The level of this tutorial is beginner, but also educated beginner. Most of the
attendees will probably be UVM computer science and pure-science upperclass
undergraduates and graduates who are finiding it increasingly important to have
a Unix-based system available to them at home for research or assignment
completion. Everyone is welcome to attend, however.
An RSVP, especially if you're bringing a group would be appreciated but is not
necessary. We hope to see you there!
