I apologize if you receive a double of this message. Toward the bottom are some IMPORTANT MEETING DATES.
PLEASE distribute this message widely around your local supervisory union/district.
As many of you are probably aware, the Department of Education, working with the Vermont Institutes, is in the midst of developing specific "grade level expectations" (GLE's), or grade "cluster" expectations, of students in a number of content areas. Capitalizing on some work that has been done by many educators in the northwest corner of the state (and supported initially by VITA-Learn), Vermont has engaged in a process to create a set of grade cluster expectations in technology for students in kindergarten through grade 12. This work is very pertinent to recent e-mails on this list whose subject has been: "Re: Software for Assessing student computer skills".
The initial work in the northwest led to the development of "Performance Assessment Tasks" for students. These tasks are the foundation for Vermont's grade cluster expectations in technology. The Performance Assessment work began (formally) almost two years ago and was first developed by a group of about 15 educators led by Ed Barry (Milton) and Gregg Martin (Chittenden South). With support from the Department of Education and the Vermont Institutes, Ed and Gregg took that work "on the road" last summer for further refining. Informational/feedback sessions were held in Bennington, Brattleboro, Bradford, and Montpelier and more than 80 people attended these full-day sessions. Since then, the Performance Assessment tasks have been the basis for the new grade cluster expectations. Since the Performance Assessment tasks covered grade 3-8, the first round of work on the GCE's also covered grades 3-8. GCE's in technology have now ALSO been developed for grades 9-12. All are considered to be in DRAFT form.
Underlying all of this work are the National Educational Technology standards for students from ISTE. The IT standards from the Vermont Framework have been aligned with the ISTE standards so that we know the Vermont Framework standards are "covered" by ISTE.
We are holding three opportunities for you to understand the work so far and to contribute your thoughts and ideas to the process. Those three identical meetings will be:
Friday, March 5 at the Coolidge Hotel in White River Junction
Friday, March 12 at the Rutland Holiday Inn
Friday, March 26 at the Colchester Hampton Inn
All three sessions will run from 8:30AM - 3:30PM. Substitute pay and travel expenses will be covered for TWO participants from each supervisory union. ** In particular if your school/district already has an "Information Technology" curriculum, please bring it to the meetings for comparison purposes.
