Our institution is moving in the same direction in Houston, Texas. There
is substantial research indicating a decrease in morbidity and mortality in
hospitals who have bachelor prepared nurses. When applying for Magnet
Status one of the critieria is having professionally credentialed nurses.
So how could we think that this will not affect us and our practices.
Thinking about the name change and considering our role as a sonographer,
educator, investigator, and resource person I thought Registered Diagnostic
Vascular Pratitioner was more appropriate to cover all our roles.
Many of us provide preliminary interpretations and assist our physicians in
deciding what would be the next appropriate step in treatment or testing,
and we also make suggestions for referrals. So our scope of practice
leads us beyond button pushing to being a dynamic part of the healthcare
team. Finally, we are in the customer service business and our customers
want the most skilled and trained personel performing their exams. I would!
