Sports Illustrated Highlights Vermont, the Catamounts and Cochrans

Link to Vermont section on SportsIllustrated.com:

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont's first America East men's
basketball title and appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship
in 2003 has been named by Sports Illustrated as the State of Vermont's
'Greatest Sports Moment In The Past 50 Years' in it's March 29th issue. The
magazine highlights several UVM teams and athletes as sports in the state
are celebrated as part of S.I.'s "50th Anniversary Sports In America"
series.

In addition to the Catamounts thrilling initial run to the "Big Dance",
UVM's four trips to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, five NCAA ski
titles and the 1996 appearance in the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four are
recognized in the "Numbers" section. Former Catamount John LeClair '91 of
St. Albans, currently a standout with the Philadelphia Flyers, is one of
six of the state's "Alltime Best" homegrown sports figures noted by the
magazine.

In "The Poll". where a random sample of Vermonters are polled on various
sports topics, UVM was selected by an overwhelming margin as the state's
"Favorite College Team" and LeClair captured 52% of the votes as the
"Greatest Athlete Who Ever Lived In Or Played For A Team In Vermont".
Vermont's three alums who are NHL All-Stars (LeClair, Aaron Miller '93 and
Martin St. Louis '97), the University of Vermont's baseball park, historic
Centennial Field and the skiing Cochran family, made up of three
generations of Catamount standout athletes, are singled out in the 'Who &
Where' segment of the state's special section.

Also an essay titled "Hard Truth" by Sports Illustrated senior writer
Alexander Wolff notes the 'grittiness' of Vermont natives in sports. Wolff,
a resident of Addison County, makes note of the exploits of current UVM
men's basketball standout Taylor Coppenrath, a native of West Barnet,
Vermont, the popularity of the radio show of head men's basketball coach
Tom Brennan and the recent sellout crowds at UVM's Patrick Gym.
