Being new to the trenches, my opinion on this is not fully formed, but I
have figured out one really vital piece of working with kids and
technology. The use of technology, especially the integration of
technology is about communicating information. So often, kids loose site
of the information in exchange for the cool factor of the technology.
I think if students fully understand how to use technology to enhance
their information, then it is a valuable use of teaching time. But, too
often, a student spends tons of time on the technology, not the
information. For example, I had a group of students choose to do a movie
about a battle. They did a wonderful job with filming and editing,
technically, it was a great film. But, an observer couldn't really tell
who won the battle. So, the information was lost.
So, bottom line is have clear teaching goals, and make sure the kids know
what the expectations are, and hold them too it, no matter how cool it may
appear. Technology is a tool they need to learn to use effectively.
