We have just started using small wireless labs in both our elementary (5
iBooks) and middle (6 Compaqs) schools. In both cases we have the access
point on a cart.
After some initial network/logon bugs, the middle school lab has been very
popular, and solves problems with scheduling and access to the lab. Laptops
in both schools have also been a great way to introduce new software (like
Inspiration & Photoshop) to teachers and students: accessible to all while
only purchasing a few copies. Allowing teachers to borrow the laptops for
working at home or on weekends has helped many folks become more comfortable
using computers and feeling that they are not "tied" to the desktop in their
classroom. Also a good chance for exploration and learning software.
We will definitely be purchasing more laptops as soon as budgets allow - we
are on 3-year leases with Apple and HP/Compaq and hope to replace 50% of our
machines every three years.
