Our schools have faced a substantial disposal problem over the past few
years, and my biggest concern has been WHERE DOES IT GO? I have always been
concerned about where the materials end up and whether they are properly
disposed of, particularly in light of AP reports a few years ago about
disposal of our toxic electronic waste in third world locations....... I
guess the major concern is with CRTs, which (I believe) can no longer be
legally put in landfills.
Last year I found an outfit in Gardner MA called Electronicycle
(www.elctronicycle.com) that specializes in environmentally friendly
recycling and remanufacturing of electronic waste (specifically CRTs). This
is where the VT state surplus depot takes their dead stuff. The issue is how
to get it there! The state depot folks were kind enough to let me "share the
ride" and pay them for shipping by weight - it ended up being $5-7$ per
monitor, but at least I had the satisfaction of knowing where the stuff was
going.
I once again have a substantial pile of monitors for disposal - would it be
worth pooling resources between schools and finding a way to fill our own
truck?
