A SANDHILL CRANE was flying over my house today. It must have circled about 5 or 6 times giving me enough time to get a really good look with my binos (swarovskis). We live approx. 3 miles from Berlin Pond in a semi-residential area. Its call was very guttural and throaty; its body was a light sandy brown with a very elongated neck. It appeared to have a dark patch (red?) on its forehead, but I could not be sure because of the light rays and the position of the bird. I held it in view until it headed in the direction of Berlin Pond. How exciting!!
On another note, we had 19 purple finches at our feeders today, one pine siskin, and a few goldfinches.
About one week ago, a RING-NECKED PHEASANT walked down our street, across the neighbors yard and stood in an idol position for 10 minutes. He was beautiful - especially that iridescent green and purple around its neck. He was talking the entire time, quite boisterous in fact.
