We have had pairs of Hooded Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards, Wood Ducks and Canada Geese on our little pond - the first time for Hoodies and Ring-necks.
Yesterday the hoodies were breakfasting on our fish when a male Mallard came splashing down. He took a shine to the female hoodie and started herding her away from her mate. After a bit, the hoodies took a deep dive and the mallard followed suit. I have read that mallards could swim under water but have never seen them do it. Soon after surfacing the mallard flew off.
We also had what might have been a Short-eared Owl in the swampy woods. It flew up and over us so quickly, no one got a good look.
Painted Turtles are sunning (well, were when the sun was shining a few days ago) and the Spring Peepers were singing last night.
