If you are still looking for the lingering Bohemian Waxwings, Deerfield Rd.
has been a reliable spot the last four days. Deerfield Rd runs parallel to
Spear Street in South Burlington. If you are coming from Burlington, turn
right onto Deerfield Drive which is immediately beyond Overlook Park.
Deerfield Road will be your first left. The length of the street is lined
with ornamental crabapples. I have been waiting for them to discover these
trees all winter! I first noticed them on Saturday and have seen them
everyday since. Time of day has varied and they never seem to stick around
too long. The flock size varies and splits at times. I have seen as few as
40 and as many as over 300. Most of the sightings have been over 100
I also saw a flock of about 75 Bohemian Waxwings on a crabapple tree today
around 4pm at the corner of Shelburne Road and Flynn Ave. That is about at
the Burlington/South Burlington town line on Shelburne Road.
Firsts for the spring for me in the last 24 hours in South Burlington have
been Eastern Phoebe singing, Brown Creeper, a pair of Golden-crowned
Kinglets and Tree Swallows. Icterids seem to be setting up territories all
over the place.
