Here in Burlington's Intervale, it seems as if the Earth is woke up today: Lots of bird activity and many flower bulbs coming up as well.
Of particular note was an extremely active flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS flycatching from the top of a couple tall trees near a lookout above the Winooski River. While walking past them on my way up the hill to grab a sandwich (that new Sugarsnap joint at the corner of Riverside and Intervale Rd is highly reccomended), an adult COOPER'S HAWK made a fruitless pass by the flock which sent the waxwings darting down.
On my way back down the hill 10 minutes later, the waxwings were back flycatching, so I sat beneath them to eat - thinking perhaps the Coops might be back. Half way through my sandwich, the waxwings darted down again. As I looked up expecting to see the accipiter, I instead saw a very dark MERLIN flapping hard with what appeared to be a waxwing in tow. It perched very nearby momentarily, then proceeded back down into the Intervale.
Why am I back at my desk?
Happy Spring everyone!
