I watched a Common Flicker arrive yesterday, amid much
hahaha-ing with another one just out of sight.
Counted sixteen Purple Finches on the feeder, with an
equally large flock of Juncos. Tree Swallows started
gathering plant material from the garden, and the
Phoebes have chosen the usual spot for their nest. It
was lovely to sit outside and watch the activity.
Then at dusk six Turkeys slowly emerged from the woods
headed towards the vegetable gardens, picking at
everything in sight. This band contained 4 females, a
jake (or female with a small beard?) and a very large
tom. Our resident deer - mom and 2 yearlings -
appeared and the youngsters began to chase the
turkeys! What fun to watch. However, the tom said
"no way" and displayed his full glory which quickly
backed them off. Half an hour later the turkeys
ambled off behind the house along our wood road, while
the deer continued to graze and play.
Shelagh in Leicester.
