I met Smith several years ago at a philosophy of science
conference at Glasgow University where he, I, Elliott Sober and others
spoke, and got to talk to him a little bit about his political past. He
certainly wasn't embarrassed by it, but by then it was a distant memory.
Lewontin may be right that he remained some kind of socialist (a
designation that covers a very broad spectrum in Britain), but he abandoned
any kind of dialectical approach to biology, which was why he was so
hostile to Gould in recent years as well as to Sober's rehabilitation of
