I have been looking at several options for our schools, most of which are
similar to iPrism in that they involve a dedicated piece of hardware. For
the larger schools there is little alternative: installing and managing
software on all workstations (300+) or running software on an additional
server is much more difficult to support. I have found nothing else that
provides the cross-platform ease of use, flexibility, and reporting features
that iPrism offers, but I agree that the upgrade costs are significant.
Altenatives I am considering:
Netspective (a "runner-up" in the 2002 research, but even more
WatchGuard FireBox X series (a firewall) with WebGuard software (uses
SonicWall firewall with content filtering subsription (also uses
The firewall alternatives are tempting because they offer some network
security in addition to content filtering, but again none of them do
everything that iPrism does.
I will complete and pass on pricing information with our Ed. Leaders for
Thursday. One note is that St. Bernard Software (makers of iPrism) have also
been the most flexible when considering a "bulk" purchase and licensing for
WWSU. This has saved us considerable $$$ for the past two years. I am
working with CDWG on similar pricing options for the WatchGuard and
