Is there anyone out there with a strong understanding and opinion on
Or should I for the same money buy one disk and a tape backup unit?
Strong opinion: Raid is not the same as "backup" :)
-- Raid will help you when one of the disk drives fails (do disk drives ever
-- Backup will help you when one of your users deletes something they didn't
want to delete. (do users ever delete the wrong file and want it back ?)
Although we have lots of raid and san storage here at UVM, we also has
system where single disk drive is backed to to another drive, and then that
drive is backed up to tape for archiving. 2 or 3 times a semester, we
restore files that were lost -- the disk as an intermediate is a nice way to
get speedy restores.
