You could run DansGuardian on either a Linux box or a Mac OS X box.
DansGuardian is free and effective. The number of users you have will
determine how powerful the box needs to be. For small schools you could
get by with a current desktop type of machine with a lot of RAM. For a
large deployment, you will need a server class machine (preferably dual
processor) and a lot of RAM.

We've been using iPrism for internet filtering in the Washington West
schools. It's generally worked well and would be happy to renew,
that the vendor is now demanding that we each purchase new hardware @
unbudgeted $1500 per school ($11k for the district), in addition to
district's annual $7k subscription fee.
Anyone have recommendations for less expensive alternatives?
