As a fellow NYorker who also desired to see moose in southern Vermont, I'll
share two locales about an hour and half drive from Glens Falls. While not
having the numbers of moose as the recommended NE Kingdom, it's a short
drive form your home. I have seen moose at both places on numerous visits.
1) Lefferts Pond. In spring and early summer, moose love to wade and eat
vegetation in one of the bays. True, I saw them very close from a canoe, but
you can see the same bay from the road and a bench on the shore.
2) Kelly Stand Road out of Arlington . . . a twisty dirt road crossing over
the spine of Green Mountain National Forest. It passes several wetlands and
small ponds with trails where moose are seen.
Of course, time of day, time of year, and crowds dictate moose observing.
I've gone to Lefferts Pond in midweek and been surrounded by 5 bull moose
and no people. But I kayaked there three weekends ago and the parking lots
and waters were filled with people. The moose would have been scared away.
Hope this helps . . .Jeff Nadler

Subject: [VTBIRD] moose...?
I hope this query comes under the "general nature observation" category and
is not too far off-topic. One of my "wants" for this summer was to see a
moose. Does anyone know of a place in Vermont that I might have a fair
chance at seeing a moose that would be a day trip from the Glens Falls area?
Thanks for any help you can offer!
