At Brilyea Access this morning (Friday July 23) : The two adult Pied-billed Grebes with 7 chicks continue in the marshy area south of the causeway. One chick managed to consume (without choking) a fish delivered to it by one of its parents, a meal that should have sated the baby for the rest of the day. Also in the same area (perhaps 15 feet from the causeway) was an adult Least Bittern stalking prey, then flying across to another clump of marsh grass. A second Least Bittern was found beneath the Route 17 bridge, spotted as we drove out the access road. Also at Brilyea were at least 3 adult Common Moorhens, a young Black-crowned Night Heron and numerous Wood Ducks, adults and young.
Nearby along Atherton Road in Addison were about 15 Killdeer, 7 Semipalmated Sandpipers and 1 Semipalmated Plover.
