Suspended early-morning warbler walks for two days due to horrible weather. Today went looking for shorebirds instead, having heard from Dick Lavallee about a couple of good locations. Results for today follow:
2 Whimbrels - These birds were found yesterday by Dick and were still present today at 2:00 PM. They are in a field on the south side of Nortontown Road in Addison, across from a stack of beehive boxes. This location is about a mile west of the intersection of Grandey Road and Nortontown Road. A scope will be necessary in order to get good views (unless the birds decide to move closer to Nortontown Road). You may have to search carefully. The birds seemed to favor a couple of small depressions, making them at times invisible.
(5) Black-bellied Plover, (1) American Golden-Plover, (1) Short-billed Dowitcher. These birds were in a wet field south of Route 2, about one mile north of Alburg. Route 2 takes a sharp curve to the left and there is a paved parallel road on the right that provides a safe parking area to view the field which is across the main highway. Passing traffic is a nuisance, but this is the only safe place to set up a scope. Many of the birds are at some distance so patience will be necessary to find and identify them. In addition to the three species above, there were also numerous Killdeer, both yellowlegs, at least one Wilson's Snipe and several peep, these latter very difficult to identify, though certainly both Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers were present.
Tomorrow it is back to my morning warbler walks on Ward Hill.
