I find all this Microsoft bashing tiresome and counter-productive.

I would say that it comes down to support. If you run your own shop, you
are under no obligation to install the patches and service packs that
vendors or CIT recommends.
However, I would anticipate that you will find that products will
require certain patch levels to function.
If you have trouble with something and need assistance, the first thing
CIT or vendor support will recommend is installing the most recent
