Felis Leads Women's Soccer to Overtime Win at Fairfield

Vermont 2, Fairfield 1 (OT)
September 19, 2004 * Fairfield, Conn. * Lessing Field

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) put back a rebound of a Kate
Moran header in the 94th minute to lead Vermont to a 2-1, come-from-behind
victory over Fairfield.

"We played a great second half. We learned some great lessons Friday (in a loss
to Iona) and the girls really took it heart," said Vermont head coach Kerry
Dziczkaniec.

"This team became a better team today because they rose to the challenge. We
couldn't be more proud of this team's character. It was a huge factor in the
final outcome."

The Stags struck first behind a wind-aided goal by Jackie Thomson in the 13th
minute. Thomson collected a failed clearing attempt by Vermont and sent a ball
back toward the UVM net. The ball floated in the blustery conditions and went
over Catamount goalkeeper Lindsay Carfagna's (Moon Township, Pa.) head and into
the net.

Fairfield (1-5-0) would hold the 1-0 lead for 74 minutes. In the final 12
minutes of regulation, Vermont (5-2-1) peppered the Fairfield net with six
shots. Sophomore Cassandra VanLeeuwen (Tillsonburg, Ontario) finally found the
net in the 86th minute, beating Fairfield goalkeeper Brett Maron to the right
side.

With the game knotted at 1-1, sophomore Amy Cochran had a one-on-one opportunity
snuffed out in the final minute and the game went into overtime.

In the extra session, Jamie Koehnlein (Honeoye, N.Y.) sent a corner kick into
the box. Moran was able to connect on the other end, but headed the ball
directly into Maron. The rebound off Maron came out to Felis who was able to
bury the shot and lift the Catamounts to the win.

Vermont returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Colgate for a
non-conference match.
