This morning Allan Strong led a GMAS sponsored bird walk in the Dead Creek
area, DAR park and points between. While the weather was cold, cloudy, and
blustery, it was an excellent morning of birding with 46 species seen.
Highlights at Dead Creek included Pied-billed Grebe, Great Egret,
Black-crowned Night Heron, American Wigeon, Wood Duck, Green-winged Teal,
Immature Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel,
Common Moorhen, Marsh Wren, and Savannah Sparrow. Along the road sides were
seen 2 Greater Yellowlegs at close range, Killdeer, several Horned Larks, a
flock of Snow Geese, and a partial albino Starling among a large flock. On
the lake were Common Loon, Surf Scoter (3), Common Merganser, and Osprey.
Passerines in the park included Eastern Wood Pewee, Eastern Phoebe,
chickadees and nuthatches, Red-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Green Warbler,
Scarlet Tanager, Cardinal, and House Finch.
All in all a great morning in Addison County.
