I hope the attached pictures (sent to me by a Yank friend) will be timely
reminders that we live in a world of images (unprecedently hard to discern
whether forged) and rhetoric pulling at our emotions rather than helping us
to use our brains to make right choices.
Having said that, we must face the possibility that the USA could elect
an even worse regime than that of the buffoon Dubya. Remember when you
thought Reagan was the worst possible? Dubya disproved that; and there's
no reason to suppose the USA couldn't get even more obscenely consumptive,
confused, hypocritical, and stupidly militaristic.
A monarch who is genuinely familiar with military realities is an
enormous - I think crucial - advantage to any industrial nation that
wants to avoid these ghastly seductive traps. That is what my nation (the
oldest democracy) has enjoyed during most of its history. It really does
matter what kind of government rules in a country, so I say long may that
monarchy live.
