AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
439 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2004

.SHORT TERM (TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY)...
ANOTHER VERY CHANGEABLE WX DAY ON TAP FOR THE NORTH COUNTRY AS 2ND
ARCTIC BNDRY IN AS MANY DAYS PUSHES ACROSS AREA...AND TEMPERATURES
TAKE ANOTHER NOSEDIVE. BITTERLY COLD AIR ACROSS NORTHERN LAKES INTO
SC ONTARIO THIS MORNING WILL MODIFY AS IT PUSHES SE BEHIND BNDRY
TODAY. NONETHELESS COLDEST READINGS SINCE LAST FEBRUARY SHOULD OCCUR
BY LATER TONIGHT INTO MONDAY NIGHT AS POLAR AIRMASS SETTLES
OVERHEAD. DECENT FGEN ASSOC W/BNDRY ALONG WITH WINDS TURNING
NORTHERLY ARGUE FOR WIDESPREAD SHSN ACROSS AREA. MAIN FOCUS WILL
OCCUR ACROSS N NY THIS MORNING...AND THEN INTO VT THIS AFTERNOON.
STILL LOOKING AT A GENERAL 1 TO 3 INCH SNOWFALL ACROSS NW HALF OF FA
THROUGH THIS EVENING...EVEN ACROSS IMMEDIATE CHVLY...WHERE NORTHERLY
CONVERGENT FLOW AND PROXIMITY OF RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF LK
CHAMPLAIN WILL ACT TO ENHANCE ACTIVITY LATER TODAY/TONIGHT. BY
TONIGHT -SN SHOULD CONTINUE ACROSS MUCH OF VERMONT. IN CHVLY THIS
WILL BE DUE TO AFOREMENTIONED MESOSCALE FACTORS. FURTHER
EAST...OPERATIONAL PROGS CONTINUE TO INDICATE DECENT SECONDARY MID
LVL FGEN MAX ACROSS CENTRAL/SOUTHERN VT ASSOC W/ENHANCED CONVERGENT
FLOW ALONG FRONTAL BNDRY DUE TO INTERACTION WITH OFFSHORE
CYCLOGENESIS. LOOKING FOR A GENERAL 1-3 INCH SNOWFALL OVERNIGHT IN
THESE AREAS. OF MORE CONCERN IS POTENTIAL FOR DANGEROUS WIND CHILL
VALUES OVERNIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING ACROSS N NY AND HAVE ISSUED
ADVISORIES FOR LATER TONIGHT INTO MONDAY TO ACCOUNT FOR THIS. LATEST
THINKING WOULD HAVE WIND SPEEDS IN THE 10 TO 15 MPH RANGE. WITH SFC
TEMPS FALLING BELOW ZERO IN THESE AREAS OVERNIGHT...THIS WOULD
PRODUCE WIND CHILLS BELOW -20 ACROSS MANY LOCALES.

SENSIBLE WX THEN QUIETS DOWN BY LATER MONDAY DESPITE VERY COLD MAX
TEMPS. SOME LINGERING -SN ACROSS EASTERN VT EARLY...OTHERWISE
INCREASING SUNSHINE ALONG WITH LT WINDS. CLEAR AND VERY COLD MONDAY
NIGHT UNDER BRIEF SHORTWAVE RIDGING...THEN A SUBSTANTIAL MODERATING
TREND ENSUES TUE/TUE NT. BY WEDNESDAY...THE COLD READINGS OF LATER
TONIGHT AND MONDAY WILL BE A DISTANT MEMORY AS HIGHS SURGE BACK INTO
THE 30S TO AROUND 40 UNDER STRONG SOUTHERLY RETURN FLOW.
&&

.LONG TERM (WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY)...
NO CHANGES TO EXTENDED PORTIONS OF FCST AT THIS TIME. LATEST MEDIUM
RANGE OP RUNS OF THE GFS AND ECMWF CONTINUE TO SUPPORT PRIOR TRENDS
OF DIGGING NEXT DEEP MID LVL TROUGH ACROSS CENTRAL CONUS
STATES...WITH SFC FEATURE RIDING NE FROM GULF COAST STATES LATER
WED...AND PASSING NW OF FCST AREA DURING THURSDAY. PROGS ALSO
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT IDEA OF STRONG WAA/AND ASSOC BAROCLINICITY WITH
THIS SYSTEM AS SFC LOW INTERACTS WITH HUGE 1040 POLAR HIGH OFFSHORE.
AT THIS TIME...PROXIMITY OF SFC LOW TRACK ACROSS OTTAWA VALLEY WOULD
ARGUE FOR PERHAPS SOME MIXED PTYPE EARLY...TRANSITIONING TO AN ALL
RAIN SCENARIO THU...THEN TAPERING TO SCT SHSN THU NT/FRI.
&&

.AVIATION (06Z-06Z)...
COLD FRONT ACROSS SOUTHEAST ONTARIO WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA
TODAY. TIMING OF WIND SHIFT FROM A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION TO THE
NORTHWEST SHOULD BE AROUND 13Z AT KMSS...15Z AT KSLK...18Z AT
KBTV...AND 19Z AT KMSS. PRECIPITATION WILL BE JUST AHEAD AND
ESPECIALLY BEHIND THE FRONT WITH SNOW EXPECTED TO REDUCE
VISIBILITIES INTO THE MVFR CATEGORY. CEILINGS WILL ALSO BE
LOWERING IN THE MVFR CATEGORY. THE SNOW WILL EVENTUALLY END ACROSS
NORTHERN NEW YORK LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND VFR CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED TONIGHT. HOWEVER...LIGHT SNOW AND MVFR CEILINGS AND
VISIBILITIES WILL CONTINUE ACROSS VERMONT AFTER 00Z.
&&

.BTV WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
VT...NONE.
NY...WIND CHILL ADVISORY MIDNIGHT THROUGH NOON MONDAY FOR
     NYZ026-027-029>031-034-087.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
1018 PM EST SAT DEC 18 2004

.UPDATE...
COMBINATION OF MAINLY CLEAR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS EARLIER THIS
EVENING ALLOWED TEMPS TO FALL RAPIDLY AFTER SUNSET...FALLING BELOW
FCSTD MINS IN SOME AREAS. HOWEVER...WITH ARRIVAL OF CLOUDS AND A
DEVELOPING SOUTH BREEZE...TEMPS ARE ON THE REBOUND...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS NRN NY WHERE TEMPS HAVE RISEN ABOUT 15 DEGREES OVER PAST
COUPLE OF HRS. ARCTIC FRONT APRCHG FROM GRTLKS WILL BRING CHC SNOW
SHWRS TO NRN NY LATE TONITE...ESPEC ST LWR VLY. NO PCPN EXPECTED
ACRS REST OF FA TILL AFTER 12Z. GOING FCST LOOKS OK...NO UPDATE
NEEDED ATTM.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION FROM 518 PM...

.SHORT TERM (TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY)...
FORECAST AREA TONIGHT WILL BE IN BETWEEN 2 SYSTEMS. A DEVELOPING
LOW PRESSURE AREA OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST TONIGHT WILL MOVE EAST
OF NEW ENGLAND ON SUNDAY. THIS WILL HELP TO DELAY THE ARRIVAL OF AN
ARCTIC COLD FRONT MOVING EAST FROM THE GREAT LAKES. WILL INTRODUCE
SOME SNOW SHOWERS LATE TONIGHT ACROSS THE ST LAWRENCE VALLEY AND
THE ADIRONDACKS. WILL KEEP THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY AND THE VERMONT
ZONES DRY TONIGHT...WITH JUST INCREASING CLOUDS.

ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION ON SUNDAY...WITH HIGH
TEMPERATURES FOR THE DAY IN THE MORNING...THEN FALLING DURING THE
AFTERNOON AS THE COLD FRONT PASSES. SNOW SHOWERS WILL DEVELOP WITH
THIS ARCTIC FRONT ACROSS NORTHERN NEW YORK SUNDAY MORNING...AND
THEN MOVE INTO VERMONT ZONES SUNDAY AFTERNOON. EXPECTING AROUND AN
INCH OR TWO OF SNOW ACCUMULATION WITH THIS FRONTAL PASSAGE. THE
COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION ON SUNDAY NIGHT
WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING BELOW ZERO FROM THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY
WESTWARD TO THE ADIRONDACKS AND THE SAINT LAWRENCE VALLEY...AND
JUST ABOVE ZERO ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF VERMONT.

ON MONDAY...TEMPERATURES WILL SEEM MORE LIKE JANUARY...AS READINGS
WILL BE MOSTLY IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ABOVE ZERO FOR HIGH
TEMPERATURES. WORK STATION ETA MODEL SHOWING POTENTIAL FOR SNOW
SHOWERS IN THE VICINTY OF LAKE CHAMPLAIN LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AND
MONDAY AS VERY COLD AIR MOVES OVER RELATIVELY WARM LAKE WATERS.
LAKE WATER TEMPERATURES CURRENTLY RUNNING AROUND 40. GREATEST
CHANCE FOR ANY SNOW SHOWERS ON MONDAY WILL LIKELY BE ON THE VERMONT
SIDE OF LAKE CHAMPLAIN AS A NORTH TO NORTHWESTERLY WIND WILL FETCH
MOISTURE OFF THE RELATIVELY WARM LAKE.

WEAK RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE TO BUILD INTO THE REGION MONDAY NIGHT
AND EARLY TUESDAY...WITH TEMPERATURES ON TUESDAY WARMING UP INTO THE
20S FOR HIGHS.
&&

.EXTENDED (TUESDAY NIGHT-SATURDAY)...
PRECIP ON THE WAY FOR MUCH OF THE EXTENDED...RIGHT INTO CHRISTMAS.
CLIPPER SYSTEM MVG OVER THE GREAT LKS REGION WILL DIP SE DURING
TUESDAY...BRINGING LIGHT -SN FOR TUES NGT. SHARP UPPER TROUGH IN
CENTRAL US DIGS FURTHER SOUTH DURING THIS TIME...CHANGING FLOW FOR
SYSTEM TO MORE SW OVERNITE TUES...WHICH WILL LIFT THIS SYSTEM NORTH
INTO QUEBEC QUICKER...WHICH IN TURN WILL SHUT PRECIP OFF QUICKER AS
WELL. WILL KEEP HIGHER POPS FOCUSED FOR NORTHERN PORTIONS OF CWA FOR
THIS EVENT...TAPERING OFF ON WED MORN. NEXT LOW SET TO APPROACH THE
NORTHEAST REGION FOR WED INTO EARLY FRI...WILL BE A LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM THAT WILL DEVELOP OVER THE SE. MDLS HAVE BEEN INCONSISTENT
WITH THIS SYSTEM FROM RUN-TO-RUN...WITH LOW TRACKING INLAND ON
CURRENT RUN...LIFTING INTO CANADA BY FRI MORN. THIS TRACK SHOULD
KEEP A MIX ON THE ONSET OF PRECIP WITH OVERRUNNING WARM AIR MVG INTO
CWA ON EAST SIDE OF LOW. WILL START OFF WITH -SW/-SN FOR ALL
AREAS...BUT ADD IN MIX...ESPECIALLY FOR EASTERN VT AS WARMER AIR
WORKS INTO REGION. THIS MAY HAVE TO BE WATCHED FOR POSSIBLE MESSY
SITUATION. LOW IS NORTH OF CWA IN CURRENT RUN...KEEPING -SW/-SN
DURING THIS TIME...AS STRONG SFC HIGH BUILDS OVER NORTHEAST LATE
THURSDAY INTO FRI...FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER LOW MVG UP COAST FOR
SATURDAY. PREVIOUS MDL RUNS FOR SYSTEM ON WED/THUR KEPT ABUNDANT
WARM AIR INTO THURS OVER AREA WHICH COULD HAVE MEANT 40S FOR
THURS...BUT WENT AHEAD TO KEEP 30S IN WITH POSSIBLE MIX...AS WAS
BETTER FIT IN AGREEMENT FOR SURROUNDING OFFICES. THINK LOW WILL
TRACK MORE INLAND...BUT WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR NEXT RUN TO SEE IF
CONSISTENT W/ 12Z MDLS.
&&

.AVIATION (18Z-18Z)...
MVFR/VFR CONDITIONS THRU 09Z W/ CLD COVER JUST ABV 3KFT...LOWERING
TO 1KFT TO 3KFT AFTER 00Z WITH APPROACH OF FRNT. SKY CONDITIONS WILL
REDUCE TO IFR/MVFR CONDTIONS FROM 10Z-18Z DURING FROPA. NO PRECIP
EXPECTED AT FORECAST PTS TIL AFT 09Z-10Z FOR KSLK AND KMSS W/ LIGHT
SNOW HEAVIER AT TIMES DURING LATE MORNING HRS...FURTHER ENHANCING
IFR CONDITIONS W/ VSBY DOWN TO 2-3SM. PRECIP WONT BEGIN TIL NEAR
MIDDAY FOR KBTV AND KMPV...LIGHT MVFR COND. WINDS SSW FOR MUCH OF
PERIOD FOR ALL AREAS...SLOWLY SHIFTING TO WNW IN NY AND MORE N AND
NW IN VT AFT 12Z. HIR TRRN WILL BE OBSCD DURING ANY SNOWFALL.
