On the early afternoon of frigid, but lovely, Friday the 21st, my
wife Susan, John & Patricia Thaxton, and I almost immediately found a
Great Gray Owl perched atop a small aspen along the snowmobile trail on
Ile Bizard, within a hundred yards of the parking area at the
intersection of Boul. Chèvremont & De L'Église.  After scanning the thin
snow cover below and glancing at us from time to time, the owl flew in
even closer, perching for excellent views.

     From Rt. 15 and the Champlain Bridge/Pont Champlain, we took Rt. 20
west to the exit for Montée St-Jean/Boul. Saint.-Jean to the north, then
Boul. Gouin to the west , next taking a right and crossing to the island
on Pont Jacques-Bizard.  Continuing due north on Jacques-Bizard, crossing
Ch. Cherrier, we turned left (west) on Boul. Chèvremont to its end at De
l'Église, parked, and hiked in the snowmobile trail.  From the Adirondack
Northway, there are only five turns:  Champlain Bridge, St.-Jean exit off
Rt. 20, Gouin, Jacques-Bizard, and Boulevard Chèvremont.  Check Matt
Medler's posting for a detailed map.
From E-town to an owl is about 2.5 hours, and we had no problem finding
the site.

     Great Grays tend to perch fairly low, usually atop the shorter
aspens which seem ridiculously fragile to support their apparent weight.
Obviously, they're mostly feathers, and quite striking birds.  A drive
west into the countryside on Chemin Cherrier may also be productive.  We
can also recommend Restaurant Boccacinos at 3800 Boul. Saint-Jean on the
