South Burlington has had a system for a number of years now where
students may receive email accounts if they submit a permission form
signed by a parent. Almost all high school students have email accounts,
as email is a component of our Computer Applications classes which has
been a graduation requirement, typically completed in grade 9.
We recently moved to a system where all students receive email accounts,
but a signed parental agreement is necessary for that email to cross the
Steve Webster makes these forms available at
It seems that almost all students have web-based email accounts and it
is rare to find a student who uses school email as a primary email
system. This breaks down a bit for communication with other students in
school, as it is so easy for students to address messages to each other
within the school email system. Most students tell me that they don't
check their school email accounts outside of school, even though there
is a web interface. I collect student "off-shore" email accounts, but
don't use them unless it is important that I reach students at home.
It's too difficult (and sometimes embarrasing) to keep track of the
usernames students tend to use.
Interestingly, I find about 1/3 of the teachers with whom I communicate
via email do not use school email addresses.

become a musician. Neither can we become engineers by just studying a

so-called theory with practice." Charles Franklin Kettering
