Vermont Leads After First Day of Williams Carnival

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont ski team is in first place, leading
by two points over Dartmouth after the first day of the Williams Winter
Carnival, which is being held at Jiminy Peak and Prospect Mountain.

Vermont has 338.5 points, second is Dartmouth with 336.5. Middlebury is not far
behind in third place with 310 points.

In the alpine races Vermont took three of the top five spots overall and five of
the top 10, as freshman Jilyne McDonald (Bellevue, Wash.) won the women's giant
slalom, just ahead of teammate Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.), who finished
second. Ashley Spina (Guildhall, Vt.) came in fifth for the Catamounts, while
Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) and Hilary McCloy (Bethel, Maine) placed ninth and
tenth overall.

In the women's 5-K classical event, Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) was the top
Catamount finisher, coming in third in 16:06.7. Emilia DeMarchis (Burlington,
Vt.) placed fifth overall, while Anja Jokela (Shelburne, Vt.) came in eighth.

Senior Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) won the men's 10-kilometer classical
race by 35.5 seconds over Catamount teammate Ethan Foster (Weston, Vt.). Ryan
Foster (Weston, Vt.) finished fifth in 27:19.1.

In the men's GS race, Vermont's Paul Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) led the way with
a tenth place finish, while Johnny Davidson (Ottawa, Ontario) was 14th.

The competition continues Saturday at Jiminy Peak and Prospect Mountain.
