"Common has grown a great deal since his first release, but throughout all of
his music lies a single thread of lyrical genius and true hip-hop that unites
all of his work into a single collection that must not be overlooked. Hailing
from Chicago, Common delivers a message that both the East and West must
respect and the world must applaud."

"The Femm Nameless is an 8 member all female Afro Beat Band from NYC. They are a
make up of musicians from all different ethnic and musical backgrounds, with
one joint sound...Afro One World Beat. With a full repertoire of tunes to last

You can rate your landlord at http://www.uvm.edu/~uvmsga/survey. Let incoming
students know how your landlord stacks up. How have they been about safety,
pricing, communication, customer service, utilities, heating and plumbing
problems, etc.?

If you're moving off-campus, check this website before finalizing where you will
live next year!!!

CoSAC needs your help. Do you have an idea for future “Did you know” tips? If
so please e-mail Andrew Kehl at [log in to unmask] This could be a question you
want answer, and interesting fact, or a tip that you think will benefit the UVM

11. Black History Month events ----------------------------
In honor of Black History Month, we will be sending out biographies of
Black pioneers in America who have made some kind of impact within the
Black/African-American community, the nation, and the world. Black history is
one of many cultural histories that have been left out of our formal educations
throughout the United States. It is only necessary for us to educate ourselves
about the historical events that have taken place and consequently, have
transformed American society forever.
The ALANA Student Center will be emailing a biography each day to raise our
awareness of the many intelligent, dynamic, and passionate
Black/African-Americans that have lived before us, as well as those who live
among us. Student Government will send out a biography each week. We hope you
enjoy the upcoming biographies and take the time to actively educate yourself
about the Black Pioneers of our time.

This week Oprah Winfrey is the featured African-American.

Below are upcoming events focused on Black History month:
2/10 Black History themed Rhythm and Brews, @ 8pm, Fire Place Lounge, L/L
2/11 BSU sponsored Breakfast at the ALANA Student Center 9am
2/15, A hair Discussion, at the ALANA Center 7pm
2/22 VOICES panel ALANA Center 630 pm
2/28 BSU's Closing event. Time and place TBA

12. Diva Action ----------------------------

DIVA DICTION: Slam Poetry, February 11th

Three amazing women will be coming to UVM to perform their slam poetry on
Friday, February 11th in the Ira Allen Chapel at 8pm. Bassey, Ishle Park and
Amalia Ortiz are among the most powerful female poets both on page and on
stage. Their unique native roots may have originated from different countries
and their cultured personalities are powerful together. All were born to
immigrant parents, hailing from Nigeria, Mexico, and Korea. Standing as a
triple threat, these three women are an empowering force!

All three ladies have competed in the National Poetry Slam and have been
featured on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO. Together the three
divas presented a tearful poetic tribute to Venus and Serena Williams at the
NAACP Image Awards of 2003, and their combined energy will bring an
unassailable feminine force to your campus. Standing as a triple threat, these
three women definitely stain the ears. Their female essence leaves audiences
refined and refreshed.

This event is sponsored by the First Year Experience (FYE) Diversity Committee.
Free admission! For additional information, contact the Department of Student
Life at 656-2060.
