As many of you may know, Vermont has been one of nine national partners with IBM, working on the development of a set of new online tools that will support a wide range of online mentoring and collaboration functions. The new tool, called "Teacher's Workplace", is currently being piloted in a variety of ways. For example, two supervisory unions (Orleans Essex North and Chittenden South) are testing the viability of the tool as an "electronic portfolio" for relicensing purposes. The Local Standards Board in each SU is also using the tool to develop a fully online approval process. In another pilot, the Vermont Mathematics Partnership (VMP) is using the tool as an online environment that engages educators in reflecting on their work through review of a variety of artifacts, and even video. Finally, there are several Higher Education initiatives using Teacher's Workplace and the rejuvenated "Standards Into Action" site for similar purposes.
As the work with this tool and other technology-based initiatives continues, the Department of Education is in search of a person with both educational AND educational technology experience and skills to support moving this work to the next level of implementation. The work will require strong interpersonal & organizational skills, an understanding of adult learning theory, and a solid understanding of standards-based teaching and learning. While there other non-technology expectations for this position, the "out of the gate" work will fall largely in the educational technology world.
