On Mar 1 and a couple of times since then, we have had a red-bellied
woodpecker picking up cracked corn underneath our feeders. One of our neighbors,
who has lived here for at least 15 yrs, says this is the first time she has
seen this bird here.
Other interesting birds here this winter: one grackle, who has stayed over
for the winter; and a shrike who has visited at least three times and who made
an attempt to take one of our female hairies. The hairy survived with the
loss of a few feathers.
