At UVM we've several different conventions - CIT uses the first initial
+ 7 characters of the last name and then turned on some tie breaking
rules; other deapartments use just the last name, or first name and
last initial. Unfortunately, we expire ID's after a year's departure,
and then recycle them ...
For email, we already have a directory alias system -
[log in to unmask] doesn't (necessarily) link to my account ...
I've been lobbying, however, for something that is iess "identifying"
(e.g. more portable, more spam proof, more secure against harrassment,
support some levels of privacy ...) something like a license plate.
(Yes, there would be a vanity id option).
(the numbers would not be assigned sequentially ... )
Although we have a password strength test, it's not very strong. (No
dictionary words, no personal names, at least 6 characters ...)
