Hi, David - I haven't seen the owls yet (though I did see the pair that
hung out around Gage Road a few years ago; I wonder if it's the same
individuals). The grebes were right where they were last year: in the open water on your
right as you approach the Brilyea Bridge. Look carefully in the reeds to the
far right, because they can disappear amazingly well. Then look for little
bobbing things in the open water. If you don't see them immediately, wait; they
could be diving.
Last year, the water was much lower and the grebes nested on a little (2' in
diameter) grassy island. There's nothing like that in the same area this year,
so I wonder where they will choose.
Monday was very productive at Dead Creek - lots of birds and almost no people
until close to noon.
