Tuesday, from S.Burlington through Bristol to
Leicester: Turkeys & TVs everywhere. Checked on the
heronry on Smead Road in Salisbury and found a Great
Blue standing on one of the nests on the east side of
the pond. At home: Flickers & YB Sapsuckers calling;
Tree Swallows in and out of the nest boxes, and the
Phoebe pair checking out the barn. A lone male
Bluebird briefly rested on top of the feeder, as did 4
male Evening Grosbeaks; male Cardinal making a daily
visit now. Broad-winged Hawks pairing up. Dog & I
startled by a (possibly?) Short-eared Owl 4:30 this am
- " mm-YOWW" - one hoot, very loud!
On the weekend my husband called me to the window
because all the little birds & one grey squirrel were
sitting frozen in place around the feeders. We
thought "hawk", raced around the house trying to spot
one, finally crept outside, but nothing visible
anywhere. Everyone still immobile when we came back
Shelagh Smith near Fern Lake.
