Rutland County Audubon 13, bald eagles 0 but it
was a great day for ducks! We had great looks at
ducks everywhere and especially enjoyed the
displaying goldeneyes. Highlights of our second
annual Eagle Quest were:
Shelburne Bay had 52 common mergansers, 8
buffleheads, 20 ring-necked ducks, 2 hooded
mergansers, 2 green-winged teal, 2 gadwalls, 4
great black-backed gulls and 3 song sparrows.
Shelburne Farms had 34 common mergansers, 27
common goldeneyes, 1 kestrel, 1 red-tailed hawk
and 20 wild turkeys.
Shelburne Beach yielded 25 common mergansers, 36
common goldeneyes and 3 ring-necked ducks.
In a field in Charlotte we saw 7 snow geese.
Charlotte Town Beach provided 133 common
goldeneyes, 18 buffleheads, numerous common
mergansers, 2 hooded mergansers, 1 herring gull
and 2 great back-blacked gulls.
At Charlotte Ferry we saw 66 ring-necked ducks,
30 buffleheads and 7 greater scaup.
2 American tree sparrows were seen on Greenbush
The Lewis Creek fishing access had 1 lone common
merganser, 1 song sparrow and 1 killdeer.
Basin Harbor Road was a bonanza with 14 common
mergansers, numerous black ducks and mallards, 7
wood ducks, 2 ring-necked ducks, 1 American
wigeon, 3 hooded mergansers, 1 bufflehad, 1
red-tailed hawk, 3 ospreys, 1 northern harrier
and 30 wild turkeys.
2 great blue herons were seen in Panton and 2
more were seen at the Stone Bridge along with 10
hooded mergansers and 63 common mergansers.
The Champlain Bridge was a great stop with 2
long-tailed ducks, 257 common mergansers, 2
red-breasted mergansers, 6 buffleheads, 1 common
goldenyeye, 2 greater scaup and 2 ospreys.
A rough-legged hawk was seen in Bridport and a
Wilson's snipe in Sudbury.
Finally in Brandon we saw 5 wood ducks, 2 hooded
mergansers, several mallards and 1 red-tailed
