GREAT picture of short-eared owl, Rick.
Have watched two separate pairs of chickadees excavating holes the last two
days. In one case, the pair was working on a 2' long dead stick that was
caught (precariously?) between the crotch of its parent tree. They were
taking turns pecking away inside. Each time one came out, s/he would shake
itself and tiny flecks of wood would flutter to the ground.
Floated Otter Creek in Danby on Sun. Great view of Bittern standing along
bank. It appeared that it might have been calling judging from the throat
action, but we did not hear anything. Perhaps it had just swallowed lunch?
Beyond the 20 or so CAGO, there were Common Mergansers, Wood Duck, Mallard,
1 Great Blue Heron, 1 Green Heron, l male KIngfisher, many Tree Swallows,
Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds (several female) and one very smelly, dead
