The Connecticut River behind Wilder Dam has been low this week, creating
shallow water and exposing mud flats just below Ledyard Bridge (between
Norwich and Hanover). This afternoon we watched 12 species of family
Anatidae there. In addition to many Canada Geese and Mallards, there
were Black Ducks, Wood Ducks, Common Mergs, Hoodies, and some nice
1 Northern Pintail (m) - very handsome!
1 Red-breasted Merganser, in flight
1 American Wigeon (f)
1 Green-winged Teal (f) - hanging out with the Pintail among the Geese
Ring-necked ducks - at least 7; both males and females
1 Common Goldeneye (m)
A female Kingfisher was fishing nearby, and we got brilliant crown views
of 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets from above.
