Bailey Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I At-Large Team
BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont senior Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.)
was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Men’s At-Large Team
that was announced on Friday. Bailey a member of the UVM men’s Nordic ski team
earned first team honors and is now eligible for national academic All-America
honors. He graduated on May 22 with a 3.67 cumulative GPA as an environmental
science major.
Earlier this month, Bailey was the 2005 recipient of the Wasson Athletic Prize.
The award, handed out for the 76th consecutive year, is presented to the senior
male and female student-athletes who have demonstrated a high level of athletic
achievement and who maintained the highest standard of academic scholarship at
Vermont.
Bailey was honored by UVM’s environmental studies program, earning a faculty
award for outstanding senior thesis research and presentations for his work
titled “Songs of Logging: Compiling Original Historical Interpretive Music
Founded on the History of Adirondack Logging”. Bailey was also inducted into
the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. Membership is
extended to students who have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and are ranked in the top
20 percent of the graduating seniors in political science.
A three-time All-American, Bailey finished his UVM career with a pair of top-10
finishes at the 2005 NCAA Ski Championship leading the Catamounts to national
runner-up honors. In six NCAA career races, Bailey finished in the top-10 all
six times. Leading into the 2005 NCAA’s, Lowell was a consistent competitor as
the Catamounts won five of six EISA Carnivals. In 11 races, Bailey won five
times and finished second five times, with his worst finish being a third-place
effort at UVM’s Carnival in the 10-K classical. He finished second in both the
classical and freestyle races at the EISA Championship and ranked second
overall in the East, first in the classical and second in the freestyle. At the
2005 NCAA’s, he was 10th in the 10-K classic race and seventh in the 20-K
freestyle. In two previous NCAA Championships, he finished second twice and was
in the top 10 in every race.
Bailey, also a member of the NCAA Skiing All-Academic Team, is the fourth UVM
student-athlete to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honors in
2004-05. Seniors Lani Boardman (York, Maine) and Derek Miller (Pelham, N.H.)
earned spots on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women’s
Basketball and Baseball First Teams, respectively. Sophomore Amy Cochran
(Keene, N.H.), a member of the women’s soccer and women’s alpine team, earned a
spot on the national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Soccer
team, becoming the first women’s soccer player at Vermont to earn the accolade.
