Faculty of Science
We are soliciting applications for a tenure-track position in the field
of atmospheric chemistry and physics. The successful applicant will work
in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics group of the Institute for
Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU). This interfaculty
research institute focuses on the fundamental aspects of climate
dynamics. Research is organized in five main themes: ice and climate,
ocean circulation and climate, atmospheric physics and chemistry,
atmospheric dynamics and boundary layer meteorology and physical
geography and oceanography of the coastal zone. The IMAU includes some
15 faculty members, 15 postdocs and 25 PhD students. The graduate
programme is organized in the Buys Ballot research school.
We invite applicants for an
Assistant Professor Atmospheric Chemistry (UD-level) (1,0 fte)
The atmospheric chemistry and physics group of IMAU focuses on the
investigation of the global cycles of atmospheric trace species. Our
main analytical approach is to use measurements of the isotopic
composition, because they can often provide more detailed insight than
measurements of the concentration alone. The group operates a fully
equipped isotope laboratory with 5 isotope ratio mass spectrometers and
numerous extraction and preparation devices. A permanent scientist
position is available for an experimental scientist to support or
complement the existing research activities in the group.
You are expected to conduct, initiate and supervise research in the
field of atmospheric chemistry and physics within the area covered by
Since the position may result in tenure, you will be expected to satisfy
the criteria required for the basic teaching qualification that Utrecht
University has introduced in connection with the so-called FLOW
regulation. If you do not meet these criteria, you are expected to
obtain this teaching qualification following your appointment.
When you have reached tenure you will be required to contribute to
organizational activities of the faculty.
Candidates should hold a PhD degree in (geo)physics or chemistry or a
similar discipline with specialization atmospheric science and have
several years of postdoctoral experience. Preference is given to those
who already have an active research programme in the field of
atmospheric chemistry and physics that supports or complements the
existing activities in the group. Experience with isotope techniques is
of advantage, but not a prerequisite.
Terms of employment
We offer a full-time position, initially for two years, which, after a
positive evaluation will be converted into a permanent position. Gross
salary will range between € 2,934 and € 4,580 per month, depending on
qualifications and experiences, (salary scale 11 or 12) according to the
Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The salary is
supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% of annual salary and a
end-of-year bonus of 2% per year.
In addition we offer: an allowance for health insurance, partially paid
parental leave, subsidy for child care, flexible employment conditions
in which you may trade salary for vacation days or vice versa. The
employment conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement
of the Dutch Universities.
The Faculty strongly encourages women to apply.
