UVM’s Bailey Named to National Academic All-America Team

BURLINGTON, Vt. –University of Vermont men’s Nordic skier Lowell Bailey (Lake
Placid, N.Y.) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
Men’s At-Large Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America.

Bailey, who earned a spot on the third team, was eligible for the national team
after earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Men’s At-Large First
Team honors.  He is the second national Academic All-American the Catamounts
have produced this season, joining junior Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) who became
the first women’s soccer player at Vermont to earn Academic All-America honors
earlier this year.

Bailey is the second UVM skier to earn Academic All-America honors in the
history of the program.  Dean Keller ’89, a four-time All-American on the men’s
alpine team and UVM Hall of Famer, earned the honor in 1989.

Bailey graduated in May with a 3.67 cumulative GPA as an environmental science
major.  He was the 2005 recipient of the Wasson Athletic Prize given out by the
UVM Athletic Department. The award, handed out for the 76th consecutive year,
is presented to the senior male and female student-athletes who have
demonstrated a high level of athletic achievement and who maintained the
highest standard of academic scholarship at Vermont.

Bailey was honored by UVM’s environmental studies program, earning a faculty
award for outstanding senior thesis research and presentations for his work
titled “Songs of Logging: Compiling Original Historical Interpretive Music
Founded on the History of Adirondack Logging”. Bailey was also inducted into
the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. Membership is
extended to students who have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and are ranked in the top
20 percent of the graduating seniors in political science.

A three-time All-American, Bailey finished his UVM career with a pair of top-10
finishes at the 2005 NCAA Ski Championship leading the Catamounts to national
runner-up honors. In six NCAA career races, Bailey finished in the top-10 all
six times. Leading into the 2005 NCAA’s, Lowell was a consistent competitor as
the Catamounts won five of six EISA Carnivals. In 11 races, Bailey won five
times and finished second five times, with his worst finish being a third-place
effort at UVM’s Carnival in the 10-K classical. He finished second in both the
classical and freestyle races at the EISA Championship and ranked second
overall in the East, first in the classical and second in the freestyle. At the
2005 NCAA’s, he was 10th in the 10-K classic race and seventh in the 20-K
freestyle. In two previous NCAA Championships, he finished second twice and was
in the top 10 in every race.

Overall this season, Vermont has placed five student-athletes on six different
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I teams.  Seniors Lani Boardman (York,
Maine) and Derek Miller (Pelham, N.H.) earned spots on the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District I Women’s Basketball and Baseball First Teams,
respectively. Cochran, a member of the women’s soccer and women’s alpine team,
earned a spot on the national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s
Soccer and Women’s At-Large First Teams and senior Kami Cote (Copperton, Utah),
a goalie for the women’s hockey team joined Cochran on the Women’s At-Large
Team.
