Rutland County Audubon had a nice bird walk along
the D& H Rail Trail from Castleton State College
today for its annual outing, meeting and potluck.
48 species were noted and 12 confirmations were
picked up for the Breeding Bird Atlas. Despite
the hot weather birds were busy carrying food and
feeding young.
Birds observed included a group of wild turkeys
(seemingly comprised of two families as there
were two sizes of young), killdeer,
yellow-bellied sapsucker (a nest cavity of loud
young that must have been driving their parents
crazy), eastern wood-pewee, red-eyed and warbling
vireos, brown creeper, chesnut-sided warbler,
ovenbird and common yellowthroat, savannah
sparrow, eastern meadowlark, bobolink and
Baltimore orioles with young.
This is a terrific spot to bird with a nice
variety of habitat and a level, easily accessible
trail.
