A lot of nice birds in Killington today while
atlassing. A small backwater of the Ottauquechee
River was a regular nursery with a pair of Canada
geese with four young, a pair of wood ducks with
five young and a female hooded merganser with one
chick. The wood ducks met the hooded mergansers
coming upstream. One of the wood duck chicks
joined the mergansers until one of the woodie
parents came to retrieve it. So much for running
away from home.
Also in this same area was a double-crested
cormorant. Its bill was quite orange-yellow and
it was very pale. First it was sitting on a snag
and then it swam downstream. Cormorants always
look they are lost and looking for something.
