VT Birders,
Yesterday on Austin House Road in Colchester, I saw the largest flock of
turkeys I've seen in Vermont. I couldn't do a head count, but I'd guess
there were 40. The interesting thing was that there were no toms, only a
few hens, and many first-year birds. But the interesting thing about the
latter is that they were in two very distinct age-classes. One was from a
first brood this summer and other was from a second brood. I could only see
the heads of the members of the second brood as they moved through the
grass. Is this summertime flock structure common?
