AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
300 AM EDT TUE JUL 12 2005

.SYNOPSIS...
NW FLW ALOFT CONTS ACRS NE CONUS AS MID/UPPER LVL LOW SLOWLY DEPARTS
INTO THE NORTHERN ATLANTIC. THE REMNANTS OF DENNIS ARE LOCATED ACRS
THE MS RIVER VALLEY WITH SLOW MOVEMENT TOWARD THE OHIO VALLEY
REGION. THIS MOISTURE WL CONT TO STAY SOUTH OF FA AS NW FLOW ALOFT
WL PREVENT SYSTEM FROM ENTERING OUR AREA. ALSO...NOTED WAS PLENTY OF
SUBSIDENCE/DRY AIR ALOFT ON WATER VAPOR LOOP ACRS OUR CWA. THIS WL
PROVIDE NORTHERN NEW YORK/VERMONT WITH PLENTY OF SUNSHINE TODAY AND
WARM TEMPS.

SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS WEAK BACKDOOR FRNT ACRS THE CPV ATTM WITH TEMPS
MAINLY IN THE 60S WITH LIGHT AND VARIABLE WINDS. OTHERWISE...WITH
LIGHT WINDS AND CLR SKIES EXPECT SOME PATCHY FOG TO DEVELOP IN
VALLEY LOCATIONS TOWARD MORNING.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY)...
NW FLOW ALOFT WL CONT ACRS OUR FA THRU TONIGHT...AS WEAK BACKDOOR
FRNT WASHES OUT ACRS THE CPV THIS AFTERNOON. THE COMBINATION OF NO
LLVL FORCING AND LIMITED SHORT WAVE ENERGY ALOFT...WL KEEP FCST DRY
TODAY. IN ADDITION...SOUNDINGS SHOW STRONG CAP AROUND 10KFT
TODAY...WITH PLENTY OF DRY ALOFT IN THE MID LVLS...WHICH IS
CONFIRMED ON WATER VAPOR THIS MORNING. PROGGED 85H TEMPS ARE 1 TO 2
DEGREES COOLER TODAY...WHICH SUPPORTS HIGHS 85 TO 90 MOST LOCATIONS
WITH M80S NE KINGDOM. TONIGHT...SOUTHERLY FLOW DEVELOPS IN THE CPV
AND PROGGED SFC DWPTS WL INCREASE INTO THE M60S...WHICH WL KEEP LOWS
IN THE U60S. WEDS...WEAK 5H VORT...COMBINED WITH INCREASE 7H
MOISTURE/LIFT...AND WEAK SFC CONVERGENCE WL MENTION CHC POPS IN THE
SLV ZNS AND SCHC OVER THE NORTHERN AREAS. PROGGED 85H TEMPS NEAR 16C
WL SUPPORT HIGHS NEAR 90F ALONG WITH SFC DWPTS IN THE 60S WL CREATE
CAPE VALUES AROUND 1500 J/KG ON WEDS ACRS THE NORTHERN SLV. THIS
LLVL INSTABILITY WL HELP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRW ACTIVITY...BUT
GIVEN SOUNDING PROFILE AND LOW/MID LVL SHEAR VALUES...IT SHOULD BE
PULSE ACTIVITY AT BEST.

THURSDAY...SFC COLD FRONT APPROACHES SLV BY 12Z AND MOVES ACRS OUR
FA DURING THE DAY. THIS SFC CONVERGENCE COMBINED WITH A 5H VORT AND
FAVORABLE JET COUPLET WL HELP TO ENHANCE TRW ACTIVITY.
HOWEVER...GIVEN TIMING OF FRNT...FEEL BEST POTENTIAL FOR SVR WL BE
ACRS OUR CENTRAL/SOUTHERN ZNS....WHERE SFC BASED CAPE WL BE BTWN
1000-1500 J/KG. IN ADDITION...THE BEST 0-3KM AND 0-6KM SHEAR
PARAMETERS WL APPROACH OUR WESTERN FA BY 18Z ON THURS AND MOVE INTO
OUR CENTRAL ZNS BY EVENING. THE SHEAR AND LLVL INSTABILITY
PARAMETERS WOULD FAVOR SOME ORGANIZED CONVECTION...WITH STRONG WINDS
BEING THE PRIMARY SVR WX THREAT. HOWEVER...STILL LOTS OF
UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING ULVL FORCING...LLVL INSTABILITY...AND
AVAILABLE MOISTURE...THEREFORE WL CONT TO MENTION CHC POPS ATTM.
PROGGED 85H TEMPS VERY SIMILAR TO PREVIOUS DAYS...WHICH WOULD
SUPPORT HIGHS BACK INTO THE 80S TO NEAR 90F.

&&

.AVIATION...
UPR LVL LOW MEANDERS ARND ERN CANADIAN MARITIMES THRU PD WITH N OR
NW H/5 FLO ACRS OUR AREA. CIRC CNTR EVIDENT INWATER VAPOR IMAGERY
JUST SE OF NOVA SCOTIA. UPR LVL RDG GRTLKS RGN WEAKENS IN RESPONSE
TO RMNTS OF DENNIS WHICH IS FCST TO MEANDER ARND IN THE TN AND LWR
OH VLYS.

SFC FEATURES IN OUR AREA ARE BACKDOOR CDFNTL BNDRY FM CAPE COD TO
NE NY. MODELS SLOLY DRIFT THIS FEATURE SW SO IT BCMS ORIENTED FM NJ
TO WRN NY BY END OF PD. SFC HI TO OUR SW...ORIENTED FM VA TO GRTLKS
RGN WEAKENS WITH TIME.

EXPECT GNRLY VFR CONDS. HOWEVER...LIGHT WINDS RMNDR OF THIS NITE WL
SUPPORT PTCHY VLY FG FRMG AS INDCD IN CURRENT KSLK AND KMPV TAFS.
DURG THE DAY TUESDAY...EXPECT SOME CI IN H/5 NLY FLO...AS 00Z/12
ACTUAL SOUNDINGS VERY DRY N AND W OF OUR FA. WL PRBLY INTRODUCE SOME
SCT HI BASED CU 5-7K FT OVR ELEVATED STATIONS THIS AFTN. THEN AFTR
04Z WITH LITE WNDS/CLR SKIES LATE NITE VLY FG WL BE A GOOD BET WITH
LCL IFR CONDS.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
758 PM EDT MON JUL 11 2005

.SHORT TERM (OVERNIGHT)...
VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWING CUMULUS CLOUDS STARTING TO
DISSIPATE ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA AT THIS TIME. GIVEN THAT WE ARE
PAST THE POINT OF MAX SURFACE HEATING FOR THE DAY...AND NO SHOWERS
OR THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA. WILL
UPDATE THE ZONE FORECASTS TO REMOVE THE 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS THIS EVENING FROM THE PREVIOUS FORECAST...AND WILL
GO WITH MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES OVERNIGHT. OTHERWISE...NO CHANGES TO THE
REMAINDER OF THE FORECAST.
&&

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
(ISSUED 343 PM EDT MON JUL 11 2005)

SYNOPSIS...
SFC HI PRESS TO BUILD ACRS THE GREAT LKS REGION TONITE THRU
TUE NITE...THEN ACRS THE FA ON WED/WED NITE. WK FRONTAL BOUNDARY MAY
STILL MOVE DOWN ACRS A PORTION OF THE ERN FA TONITE THRU TUE...THOUGH
IT HASN/T CAUSED MUCH CONVECTION ANYWHERE NEAR THE FA JUST YET.

SHORT TERM (TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT)...
WK H85 CAA TO TAKE PLACE ACRS THE FA TONITE AND TUE...THEN WK WAA FOR
THE REST OF THE SHORT-TERM PERIOD. SOME LOW-LVL MSTR ADVECTION TO
TAKE PLACE ACRS THE FA ON WED. SOME LOW-LVL MSTR TO AFFECT FA
THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SHORT-TERM PERIOD. MID-LVL LAPSE RATES TO BE HI
ACRS THE FA EARLY TONITE. PW VALUES ACRS THE FA LOOK TO BE DROPPING
TO AOB AN INCH TONITE THRU TUE NITE.

LAPS SHOWS BEST INSTABILITY ACRS THE FA ACTUALLY ACRS THE VLY
LOCATIONS ATTM. ENVIRONMENT ACRS THE FA APPEARED TO BE BECOME MORE
AND MORE WEAKLY SHEARED AS THE EVENING PROGRESSES TONITE WITH
WET-BULB ZERO HTS OF AROUND 8.5 KFT EARLY. WILL MOST LIKELY LEAVE THE
GOING SCHC POPS ACRS MUCH OF THE FA ALONE FOR MUCH OF TONITE
(ESPECIALLY EARLY). WITH SOME AVAILABLE MID-LVL DRY AIR AND DECENT
INSTABILITY/MID-LVL LAPSE RATES/PW VALUES EARLY TONITE...ANY STORMS
THAT DO FORM WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED FOR POSSIBLE GUSTY WINDS AND
+RA.

ANY SIGNIFICANT FORCING APPEARS TO BE VERY LIMITED ACRS THE FA IN THE
SHORT-TERM PERIOD. BEST GUESS ATTM IS ANOTHER SCHC OF CONVECTION ACRS
THE FA ON TUE AND AGAIN ON WED/WED NITE. WILL LEAVE TUE NITE DRY
ATTM.

LOADED IN THE LATEST MAV DEWPTS TO TRY AND GET A BETTER HANDLE ON
POSSIBLE HUMID PERIODS IN THE SHORT-TERM PERIOD. STILL NOT SURE WHAT
THE HECK THE "MAGICAL" DEWPT NUMBER IS IN THE ZFP FORMATTER THAT
TRIGGERS THAT WORDING THOUGH. T1MAX TEMPS ARE IN THE L80S-L90S ON TUE
AND AROUND 90F ON WED.

PRELIM WRK ZONES AND ISC GRIDS AVAILABLE. ALL FINAL PRODUCTS BY
AROUND 4 PM.

LONG TERM (THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY)...
ENSEMBLE DATA SHOWS MAIN BRANCH OF WESTERLIES WILL BE UP ACROSS
CANADA AT THE START OF THE PERIOD...THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. COLD FRONT
THAT HAS BEEN ADVERTISED TO MOVE ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA LATE
THURSDAY AND INTO FRIDAY WILL HAVE A HARD TIME MOVING THROUGH THE
AREA IN THIS FLOW PATTERN. BEST CHANCES FOR PRECIPITATION ON
THURSDAY WILL BE UP ACROSS THE NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE FORECAST AREA
DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS. ANY FORCING ON FRIDAY WILL
BE TERRAIN INDUCED AND WITH INCREASING MOISTURE...SHOULD BE A SMALL
CHANCE FOR MAINLY DIURNALLY DRIVEN CONVECTION OVER THE HIGHER TERRAN.
FRIDAY WILL ESSENTIALLY BE A TRANSITION DAY AS FLOW ALOFT WILL
EVENTUALLY BACK ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY AND ALLOW FOR A COLD FRONT TO
MOVE EAST TOWARD THE REGION. AT THE SAME TIME...THE BACKED FLOW WILL
ALLOW DEEP MOISTURE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF WHAT WAS ONCE
HURRICANE DENNIS TO FINALLY GET UP INTO THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY.
THUS BETTER CHANCES FOR CONVECTION WILL OCCUR ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
UPPER TROUGH AND ITS ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA
SUNDAY NIGHT WITH FRONT PUSHING FAR ENOUGH SOUTH TO KEEP DRY WEATHER
OVER THE AREA ON MONDAY. MAIN CONCERN WITH THE CONVECTION ON
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY WILL BE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN AND THIS
SITUATION WILL HAVE TO BE MONITORED.

THROUGH THE ENTIRE PERIOD...850 MB TEMPERATURES WILL GENERALLY BE
BETWEEN +16C AND +18C. AS A RESULT...HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN
THE 80S WITH THURSDAY AND FRIDAY LIKELY BEING THE WARMER DAYS. WITH
DEEPER MOISTURE MOVING IN ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY...ALONG WITH
INCREASED CLOUD COVER AND PRECIPITATION CHANCES...HIGH TEMPERATURES
WILL STILL BE IN THE LOWER TO MID 80S...OR 2-4 DEGREES COOLER THAN
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.

AVIATION...
VFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED FOR MUCH OF THE PERIOD. CUMULUS CLOUDS
WILL INCREASE OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN THIS AFTERNOON AND SOME
ISOLATED CONVECTION IS POSSIBLE. AGAIN...ANY CONVECTION WILL BE OVER
THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO PRODUCE VERY GUSTY
WINDS. THE BEST POTENTIAL FOR CONVECTION WILL BE FROM ABOUT 20Z
THROUGH 02Z AND ANY CLOUD CEILINGS WILL BE AROUND 5000 FEET. NO
SYNOPTIC SCALE STRONG WINDS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH THE PERIOD WITH
CLEAR SKIES EXPECTED FROM 06Z THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD.
